What is a dental crown?

A dental crown covers the entire visible portion of a tooth from the gumline up. It is indicated when a tooth has lost so much structure — from deep decay, fracture, or root canal treatment — that a conventional filling would not provide adequate protection. Crowns are also used to cap implants, anchor three-unit dental bridges, and correct the shape or color of severely malformed teeth. Material choice depends on location and aesthetic demand: zirconia is the most durable metal-free option, ideal for molars and patients with metal sensitivities; lithium disilicate (all-porcelain) delivers the most lifelike appearance for front teeth; and porcelain-fused-to-metal is a cost-effective alternative, though a dark margin may appear at the gumline over time. The standard workflow requires two appointments: tooth preparation and impression at the first visit, then cementation of the final crown 1 to 2 weeks later once the lab fabrication is complete.
