What is smile design?

Smile design is a planning process in which a cosmetic dentist evaluates the shape, color, size, and alignment of your teeth in relation to your gums, lips, and facial proportions. The result is a customized treatment plan that may combine veneers, teeth whitening, composite bonding, and gum contouring to achieve a balanced, harmonious appearance. Many practices use Digital Smile Design (DSD) software to produce a visual preview before any treatment begins; some also create a diagnostic wax-up — a physical model of the planned outcome — that lets the patient evaluate the proposed changes before any irreversible steps are taken. Because smile design addresses multiple elements, it often requires 2 to 3 planning consultations before treatment starts. Depending on the initial condition of the teeth, an orthodontic phase may be recommended before cosmetic work to ensure proper alignment. Gum health must also be confirmed or treated before veneers or crowns are placed.
